No One Gets The Prize

I don't have a lot of time to 'blog' today, so I'll keep it short and sweet by sharing with you a Danny Krivit edit of Jimmy Simpson's mix of Diana Ross's 1979 disco classic No One Gets The Prize from her album, The Boss. This was another amazing Krivit edit that was included on his brilliant Mr. K Edits record. Hopefully one day I will actually be fortunite to get my hands on a vinyl copy of the hard-to-find classic. Enjoy your weekend!

Hot Latican Funk

Recently I was listening to The Kay-Gees 1979 LP Burn Me Up for the first time in a while, and was blown away by the album's opening cut "Latican Funk". I've owned this record for a few years and for some reason did not realize how great of a song this track is. The song which has a bit of a funky latin-disco vibe was produced by a team of legendary producers which included Ken Morris, Patrick Adams, and Stan Lucas. Now, this is not the only good track on the record as many of you might know with other classic gems being "Sing A Happy Song (Sing, Sing, Sing)", "The Rhythm Is Hot", and the title track "Burn Me Up". I love those moments that you re-discover those records that have been collecting dust over the past couple of years. This was definitely one of those moments.

You Do It So Good

Another nice find in 2008 was finding a used and extremely cheap copy of Larry Page Orchestra's 1978 LP Skin Heat. When it comes to the Larry Page Orchestra, the only music that I was familiar with was the music included on his classic 1977 Erotic Soul LP. I had no idea that this disco project had more to offer with the group's follow-up record. That being said, I was immediately impressed with Skin Heat after listening to the songs opening track "You Do It Good", which has a bit of a "disco inferno" driving groove to it. Other standout cuts like the latin flavoured "Restless Senorita" and the albums single "Slinky Thighs" definitely had me sold on this record. Just like Erotic Soul, this record was produced by Charles Blackwell. The songs opener, "You Do It Good" continues to be a consistent favorite included in many of my live deejay mixes. Not bad for a record that I found hiding away in a record store selling for a buck! Pure Goodness.

(I also expect to do an edit of this song later this year for Cabana Disco vol.03)

Disko Inferno

Here's an edit I did this past week of Fire and Ice's 1979 disco cut "Inferno". The original, which is featured on the groups only self-titled album, was produced by Lalo Schifrin and was put out by Butterfly Records. I always enjoyed parts of this track, however thought it could use a bit of a tune-up in certain areas. Hope you enjoy!

Get Loudefied

Netherlands' own Loud E had a huge year in 2008, releasing some of the year's finest disco re-edit twelve inches, including Drums Dutour II, Robolove, and Y.O.Y., on UK's Ambassador's Reception label. This trend is definitely continuing right into the new year with Loud E's new album Loudefied. This eleven track CD (unfortunately no vinyl as of yet) includes some of Loud E's finest edits to date by including something for every disco lover, from the afro-funky flavoured "Johnville Jungle", "Tower Of Love", and "Blacksoul" to the more cosmic spaced-out numbers like "Boutique", "Oceans Of Loud", and "Granada Nights". One can't also ignore the albums amazing two lead-in cuts "Prox" and "2004 Time Machined", which along with "Bill's Boa" happen to be my personal favorites at the moment. This album is perfect for fans of Phantom Slasher, Major Swellings, DJ Harvey's Black Cock edits, and Rune Lindbaek's Klub Kebabb LP. Loud E and Ambassador's Reception has definitely put together an early contender for best disco re-edit release of 2009. Not bad for a bunch of 'lost music' that was found lying around in European flea markets.

Black Cock Disco

Here is an older disco edit by the 'Black Cock' team of DJ Harvey, Gerry Rooney, and Simon Lovejoy. The track, "Frog Scene" was released back in 1997 on the Black Cock label that was run by Harvey and Rooney. The records from this small label tend to be released in limited quantities and tend to be hard-to-find, which makes sense due to the continued brilliance of Harvey's editing skills. That being said, if you come across any of their twelve-inch edits, I highly recommend not passing them up. Definitely top-shelve disco quality! Enjoy the cock!

Anybody Wanna Party Tonight?

It's Friday, so I'll keep this short and sweet because you shouldn't spending your evening staring at the computer hunting down disco gems...that's what Sunday through Thursday are for. Regardless here is a special extended disco mix of Gloria Gaynor's 1978 classic "Anybody Wanna Party?". You can find a shorter version included on her popular Love Tracks LP, however the extended version, in my opinion, is so much better. This was a popular and regular rotating track at Studio! this past year. Enjoy the weekend!

Knowing How To Love Your Man

A little boogie from Willie Hutch off of the Foxy Brown soundtrack from 1974. Let's just say that the combination of Hutch and Pam Grier is just simply deadly. There is a solid Danny Krivit edit that was released a few years back if you can get your hands on a copy of that re-edit twelve-inch. That being said, enjoy this original early boogie classic!

Cabana Soul Music

Here is another preview of the second volume of the Pat Les Stache Presents: Cabana Disco series. This time I'm editing The Michael Zager Band's track "Soul to Soul" off the 1978 album Let's All Chant. This edit will be featured with three other edits including John Davis & The Monsters Orchestra's "Ain't That Enough For You", The Nightlife Unlimited's "Love Is In You", and Shîtan's "Disco Shîtan". I would love to hear some feedback! Enjoy!

Disco Skating Beats Jogging

Does anyone wish they would bring back the roller disco? Well regardless, here is Citi's classic roller boogie gem "Roller Disco". This was the group's hit single and title track off their 1979 LP, Roller Disco, released on the De-Lite Records label. I also thought I would share a solid re-edit of the classic roller boogie track by Southside Connection, released back in 2003. The edit has a bit of a house vibe, however I think it would still work nicely in a disco mix. Now break out the skates and boogie!

Happy Inauguration Day!

Happy Inauguration Day! Congratulations Obama, I've been waiting for this day for 8 years. I admit that I've been glued to the TV for the entire day enjoying this amazing day! That being said, Goodbye Bush...You won't be missed.

Don't Turn Your Back

Here is a classic disco cut, "Don't Turn Your Back On Me" by the The Frontline Orchestra, to work into those late night Inauguration parties. This classic twelve-inch record was released on Eddy Grant's ICE label in 1981. Even though this record was originally released in the UK, the single saw it's most success as being a constant staple in many of Larry Levan's legendary mixes during his time at the Paradise Garage. Regardless, a classic cut for an unforgettable day. Enjoy!

Shoot Me With Your Love

I'm in the middle of a small vacation, hence the short updates for the next couple of days until I'm back in full swing. That being said, here is classic cut from Tasha Thomas entitled "Shoot Me (With Your Love)" from her 1978 album Midnight Rendezvous. This track along with probably "Hot Buttered Boogie" became Thomas's most notable songs of the disco diva's career. Even though her life was unfortunitely cut short due to her losing battle with cancer in 1984, this amazing singer left us a classic record to be forever remembered by. Enjoy!

New York City Woman

A record that's been on my wishlist for quite sometime has been C.K.B.'s 1978 disco album, New York City Women. This now hard-to-find record was another fine disco release by Carrere, which easily one of my favorite record labels. C.K.B. was a disco project produced by Luigi Ojival, whom also worked on other solid disco projects including Silver Shoes, Black Diamond, and St. Tropez. My favorite two cuts on the record are definitely the funky "Woman to Woman" and "City Woman". That being said, I'm definitely considering doing an edit of "City Woman". There seems to be a lot to work with there. Overall it's solid record and another great disco project released from Carrere, a label whom is responsible for many of the great disco gems of the late 1970's.

The Boogie Breakdown

Another record I bought over the past few months, that I've been enjoying to quite a bit lately, is Boogie People's rare 1979 self-titled LP. This record featured the lovely singing of Silvie Doucet, Tiziana Bibbo, and Anna Bibbo, better known as The Unique. This was one of those late 70's disco records that comprised of only four solid cuts. I find that as disco was entering into it's last days, producers tended to cut the fat and fill up both sides of a record with more hi-energy cuts while dumping the slower and mid tempo ballads that tended to take up space. That being said, the Boogie People lp, which was produced by Dominic Sciullo and Vincent Ciambrone while also featuring Bruno Perri of the Erotic Drum Band, consisted of solid cuts from top to bottom including the title track "Boogie People" and "Boogie Breakdown" to name my personal favorites. Overall it's a great record and another great find from this past year. Enjoy!

Poo-Say! Poo-Say!

One record that I was happy to pick-up in 2008 was Poussez!'s 1979 self-titled album. Poussez! was a project produced and conducted by Alphonse Mouzon with the helping of vocalist Christine Wiltshire, whom also contributed vocally to many oter classic disco groups including Phreek, Class Action, Musique, and Aural Exciters. Overall the record is pretty solid from start to finish. It includes solid disco cuts, which include "Come On And Do It", "Boogie With Me", "You're All I Have", and "Never Gonna Say Goodbye" . Here is my personal favorite track, "You're All I Have", from this great record. Enjoy!

Cappuccino Delight

Lately I've really been enjoying a couple of classic disco cuts including "Hell Dance With Me" and "Tomorrow" from Cappuccino's 1980 self-titled album. I orginally heard of Cappuccino through a Dimitri From Paris edit of "Hell Dance With Me" (renamed El Bailara Conmigo) which was included on the Kings of Disco compilation. The original tracks were produced by both Danilo Vaona and Gian Pietro Felisatti and was released off of Black Sun records. Overall it's basically just another one of those one-and-done disco projects that left us with some left over disco gems from the last days of the golden disco era.

Staying Noid

Since I've really been into Noid Recordings, new and old releases, as of late, I thought I would do a poll on your favorite Noid release. The label, which is run by The Idjut Boys has been one of my favorites for quite sometime and I find that the releases continue to get better and better through the years. My personal favorite has to be Major Swellings' (aka Prins Thomas) self-titled LP. Not only is the amazing re-edit full-length from Noid, but in the running for my overall favorite all-time release. That being said, I still don't own a vinyl copy, therefore if there is anyone out there that wants to sell me theirs, name your price!

Enjoy the poll!

Just Can't Give You Up

I was happy to snatch up a pretty good find this weekend in picking up a used copy of New York's Mystic Merlin's 1980 funky disco classic "Just Can't Give You Up". I was excited to find the record in a bin for only two bucks at one of my neighborhood record stores. This track was probably the group's most notable during there late 1970's to early 1980's run. After first listen, I immediately realized that this track is primed for a future 'Pat Les Stache' re-edit. Stay tuned on that. After doing some research I also found that this group started off being sort of a novelty act, incorporating magic into their live shows. As time went on, it seems like the group got a bit more serious with their music as their popularity began to somewhat grow within the soul and disco scene. Regardless, it was a great find for a ridiculously cheap price, and in these harsh economic times, coming across deals like this can generally make a person's day.

Always Keep a Light Shining

If your as big of a fan of The Joubert Singers classic "Stand On The Word" than you'll love this 1978 gospel disco classic titled "I'll Keep A Light In My Window" by The New York Community Choir. This was one of the standout tracks on the groups Make Everday Count LP. The track, along with the entire record, was written by Arthur Freeman and Benny Diggs of the 70's disco group Revelation. "I'll Keep A Light In My Window", as a song, I find to be very addicting and uplifting. If you want to break a dancefloor down, this might be the cut you've been looking for.

Theme From Disco...1977

Someone recently requested Sassy's 1977 rare disco classic "Theme From Disco 77", and since it was such a good request I thought I would share the track. Sassy was another classic, however short-lived, project by legendary disco producer Ray Martinez. "Theme From Disco 77" was Sassy's most notable release with the group only putting out a couple of records including the even harder to find Hot Women / Sweet And Deep seven-inch. Regardless, it's just another classic cut from the brilliant Ray Martinez!

A Disco Doobie

I must admit that I'm loveing this Jim Burgess mix of The Doobie Brothers' 1979 single "What A Fool Believes" and if you give it a chance you might fall in love with it as well. This version in my opinion is so much better than the original with the added Percussion that Burgess does a nice job bringing to the forefront.

Saturday Night Disco Music

I've mentioned the Saturday Night Band's 1978 debut album Come On Dance, Dance in the past on this blog, however here is "Let's Make It A Party" from their 1979 follow-up Keep Those Lovers Dancing". This record is another solid project from the Jesse Boyce and Moses Dillard production team that also brought the disco world Constellation Orchestra and Frisky. Many of the tracks on the album were mixed by François Kevorkian and consisted the lovely vocals of Lorraine Johnson. This also marked the final release from the disco project. Even though the concept was short lived, Saturday Night Band made their mark with put together two solid records.

Lifting Off to Space

Here's a little space-flavoured disco for your Tuesday with Blush's 1978 rare disco classic "Lift Off". This track appears on the extremely sought after album Out Of This World" which was written and produced by Mike Pilot. I've noticed the track in many mixes floating around the internet as of late, so I thought I would post it. The above image is actually from the Australian release of the album, which went under the Odyssey alaise for some unknown reason. Regardless, it's a great record that I hope I find one day!

Tropical Daytime Lover

It's a new year, and I'm feeling in a giving mood. Therefore I thought I would share another track from the upcoming Pat Les Stache Presents Cabana Disco Vol. II twelve-inch. This time around it's a re-edit of Shîtan's 1977 funky tropical erotic disco rarity "Disco Shîtan". The original was released as a seven inch only single back in 1977 and was produced by Pino Presti. The re-edit will be included with re-edits of Nightlife Unlimited's "Love Is In You" and John Davis & The Monster Orchestra's "Aint That Enough For You" to round out the upcoming Cabana Disco Vol.02 twelve-inch. Hope you enjoy!

Do It With Feeling

Over the past year, especially, I got more and more into the music produced by Michael Zager. One of the tracks that I find myself really into as of late, was the only twelve-inch release that the producer did under the name Michael Zager & the Moon Band back in 1975 entitled "Do It With Feeling". This record featured lead vocals by Peabo Bryson and was released by Bang Records. The record also could be traced back as the earliest stint Zager experimented with disco. Zager never released another twelve-inch under the "Moon Band" alias, choosing to move to other projects like the Afro-Cuban Band and the more notable The Michael Zager Band. I hadn't heard "Do It With Feeling" until this past year, however on first listen, I was absolutely hooked with Zager exploring an early disco sound that infused a slight rock edge that groups like Barrabas became known for. Overall, it's a great track and just one of the many solid Michael Zager producer classics during the mid to late 1970's.
