Afro Rock Five

I thought I would end the week with the Afro funk gem "Marie Thérèse" by the group Malinga Five. This was just one of the many great tracks off the group's superb 1977 album Rock Africa, which I've featured a few times on this site (SEE Malinga Five). The track "Marie Thérèse" was also included on a 45RPM (which is pictured above) alongside another great track in "Kalimbo" a year prior to the full-length album was released. Overall, another solid track from what I can tell is one of the best Afro funk records of all-time in Rock Africa. Enjoy!

Malinga Disco

Let's start the week off with a great re-edit from Diesel & Jarvis of Malinga Five's 1977 African disco gem "Malinga". This funky edit was released a few years ago as a part of the continuously growing Moton Records Inc. re-edit series. The twelve-inch record also includes two other solid edits including a funky laid back reworking of Bella Vista's 1982 cosmic gem Mister Wong. Overall, is a great re-edit record that I highly recommend worth purchasing.

Kaloule Woman

Here is a recent re-edit I did of Malinga Five's 1977 funky Afro gem "Kaloule Woman". I played around with this edit for quite a while, trying to find the right overall arrangement/ feel, and I came to the decision to keep a lot of the original elements intact. I always thought the original track was a little short in actual length, coming in just under three-minutes, therefore what I focused on was mostly extending certain areas of the song, giving the overall track more longevity. I originally planned on releasing this as part of Cabana Disco Vol.05, however at this point I haven't decided if and when the edit will receive a proper vinyl release. That being said, I definitely would love to hear everyone's feedback. It took sometime for me to come up with something that I was truly satisfied with, however now that it's finished I can honestly say that I am happy with the overall results. Hopefully everyone else feels the same. Enjoy and Feedback Please!

Kaloule Woman

A track that has personally been a consistent favorite over the past few years is the African disco gem "Kaloule Woman" by the Malinga Five. This song was featured on the group's hard-to-find 1977 album Rock Africa. The song features some smooth soulful vocals that blend nicely alongside the song's funky African disco groove. My only complaint is that the song ends a bit prematurely, totaling in at just three minutes in length. After listening to the track over the years, I've always believed that there is some room for the song to include a few more long instrumental breaks. Regardless, "Kaloule Woman" is a solid track and one that will continue to be in constant rotation whenever I get in the mood to hear some really funky African music, which happens quite frequently. Enjoy!
