Wax Poetics Issue 41

The latest issue of Wax Poetics was just released. The 41st issue focuses on the early and defining age of Hip-Hop music. Now I don't cover hip-hop on this site, however as of all their issues, Wax Poetics will be certain to take things back to the genre's roots which was arguably influenced directly by a lot of the funk and soul that has been covered on this site. As a huge supporter of this magazine, which seems like the only one these days shining a light on the pioneers, musicians, and releases from the classic ages of disco, funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, and world beats, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this latest issue.

I would also love to know if the readers of this blog tend to be consistent Wax Poetics readers and subscribers. And if so, what was your favorite past issue?

I'll start off by saying that Issue #39, the Africa Issue, was my overall favorite. I think I read that magazine from front to back at least three times. I feel like the issue serves as a great guide to both African music scholars and people who have just recently got into Afrobeat, Highlife, and Afro funk. For what I enjoy, that issue is always going to be tough to top!

Love Waxpoetics. Not a subscriber at the moment, but I do tend to pick it up regularly these days. Always some great record re-discoveries and interviews inside. As far as disco-related stuff goes, I've read some nice interviews with Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess and Randy Muller in past issues. Besides that, as you say, it serves as a great guide/gateway to all sorts of music... Have to say one of my favourites so far was #33, the Philly issue. Nice interviews w/ Gamble & Huff, Vince Montana and a slightly tense one w/ Teddy Pendergrass.

I second the Gamble & Huff issue. Didn't realize all the other disco-oriented stuff in past issues...I'll have to search it out!
