I don't have much time to blog today, so I think I will keep it short with this funky classic, entitled "Ashiko" from one of my favorite African jazz horn players Hugh Masekela. This nine-plus-minute cut is featured on Masekela's 1975 The Boy's Doin' It LP, which I happened to pick-up in New York for about two bucks! Who are some other African jazz horn players that you like?
Well probably for starters, Manu Dibango, even though I know he technically qualifies as a saxophonist and vibraphone player.
That being said, after re-reading the post, it can be a bit misleading because I definitely don't have a huge knowledge of African jazz horn musicians. I think I was trying to be desciptive in the fact that he originated from Africa and my personal love for a lot of his music. So I apoligize for not being a little more focused in my statement. However if your looking for a number of great African musicians, all you need to do is pick up one of the many Nigerian comps that recently came out on Strut and Soundway.
