Jungle Music

Well I hope everyone had a good holiday season and happy New Year. It's good to finally be back on a normal schedule again, even though I must say the time off was very much appreciated and much overdue. Anyways, I thought the best way to ring in the new year, on this site, would be to go about it the same way I decided to end the last year, with a new re-edit!

Here is another re-edited version of Kongas' 1978 tropical disco track "Jungle". Now I don't make it a practice to re-edit songs twice so let me explain the back-story on this particular situation. Early last year when I was working on an edit of this track for the first Athlete Edits release, I couldn't decide whether to use the songs gritty verse vocals or exclude them altogether, therefore I made two versions: 1) A version with the vocals and 2) A more dubbed-out version of the track that had less vocals. In the end, for whatever reason, I decided to go with the more dubbed-out version on the Athlete Edits release. I always planned on sharing the other version of the edit, which in a lot of ways is very similar, however I wanted to provide enough space between the two different versions so that one didn't overshadow the other. Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion anyone might have about the fact of why I would post another version of an edit. For those that tend to really enjoy the originals grittier vocals, this version might be a little more up your alley. I actually really enjoy both versions, with them having a slightly different overall feel. At this point, I'm unsure if I would ever release this version on vinyl, especially because I would like to move on and focus on other material that I'm currently working on. That being said, having two versions of an edit in this instance is something that I certainly do welcome, especially when I personally enjoy each of them in different ways. Enjoy!

Sound of the Jungle

I'm counting down the hours to the beginning of the long 3-day weekend, however before I sign off for a few days I thought I would share a recent re-edit I did of Kongas' 1978 tropical disco track "Jungle". As soon as I heard this track years ago, I knew I would want to eventually put my own spin on it and re-edit the song. This was a really enjoyable edit to work on, as I got to play around, as I always like to do, with a lot of interesting nature sound effects. Right now I haven't decided if this edit will receive a proper release or not, as I've been spending most of my time trying to organize the next Cabana Disco release. Until then, sit back and enjoy your long weekend to the funky sounds of the jungle.

The Jungle In My Mind

If you have listened to a number of my edits, you will find that I have a thing for animal and jungle atmospheric sound effects. I love this idea of a disco located somewhere in the deep hidden terrains of a tropical jungle. A song that captures that ascents is the Kongas'(featuring Cerrone and Alec R. Costandinos) 1978 funky disco gem "Jungle". This rendition of the track appears on the group's Anikana-O LP. An earlier, more raw version of the song can also be found on the group's 1974 self-title outing, however the track lacks the same disco appeal and production quality that I feel the later version posses, which probably has to do with the fact that Tom Moulton handled the records overall mixing. Jungle is just one of the many great songs on the record, which also includes funky disco classics like "Kongas Fun" and the self-titled track "Anikana-O". Overall, the entire album, in my mind, is one of the best records that both Cerrone and Alec R. Costandinos have collaborated on and one I highly recommend snatching up when you get the chance. I'm currently finishing up an edit of the "Jungle" track for Cabana Disco vol.5. Look for it on this site in the coming month. Enjoy the Jungle!

Kongas' Anikana-O

I'm going to take the liberty today to post one of my all-time favorite tracks in Kongas' 1978 version of "Anikana-O". This extended version of the song was featured as the leading track on the Anikana-O LP. An earlier and shorter version of the song first showed up on the first Kongas LP back in 1974. However with the help of Tom Moulton, who mixed the track, and Alec R. Costandinos, who helped re-write the later version, "Anikana-O" became a disco gem, as well as one of the group's most notable cuts. The song has an overall latin-flavoured groove to it that works nicely alongside the gritty vocals. Regardless, it's an amazing song and one of the many solid productions from a group that features some of disco's most legendary players (Cerrone, Don Ray, Alec R. Costandinos, etc.).

NOTE: The image is from the 1974 7" version of "Anikana-O", and not the 1978 LP. I choose this photo instead, because I thought it was a bit more interesting.
