Let's get the week going with the funky Brazilian gem "Simbareré by the duo Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. This amazing track was featured on the group's 1972 album Cada Segundo and was later included on Strut's superb 2000 compilation Club Africa 2. A great track with a funky Afro groove. Enjoy!
Let's start the week off with a funky instrumental Brazilian gem by Som Três titled "Homenagem A Mongo". This rare track was included on the group's very hard-to-find 1969 album Som 3. The track nicely blends together bossa grooves with a bit of a instrumental mod-style pop feel that results in a number of solid breaks that are primed for sampling. A true funky Brazilian classic!
Continuing to reject the current cold weather climate, I thought I would warm things up a bit (musically speaking of course) with the rare Brazilian funk track "Embalo Diferente" by the group Os Devaneios. This tropical gem was featured on the group's hard-to-find 1978 album Embalo Diferente. More Recently the track, "Embalo Diferente", has appeared on a number of solid Brazilian compilations including Nascente Records' The Brazilian Funk Experience and Brasilia Discos' Via Brazil Vol.4, however the funky track continues to be a very rare find. If you come across the original, I highly recommend snatching it up. Enjoy!
First off, I want to say thanks for all the kind birthday wishes that everyone sent me on this site and on facebook. I certainly appreciate all the love. I also want to send an extra special thanks to my wife Stacy, for throwing me an amazing party Friday night. It was one of those parties that makes you wish you could turn thirty every year.
With my upcoming trip to Hawaii approaching this week, it's safe to say that I'm feeling a bit "tropical". To help compliment my current mood, here is the left-field Brazilian gem "Maracatu Atômico" by one of Brazil's most notable artists in Gilberto Gil. This funky track was featured on Gil's 1979 album Nightingale. It may also be worthy to note that a solid re-edit of this track, put together by Lucci Capri, was recently included on the fifth volume of the superb Messalina re-edit series. Overall, just another funky tropical gem from one of Brazil's greatest musicians. Enjoy!
I was excited this past weekend to pick-up a used original copy of Luiz Bonfá's 1972 Brazilian psych-funk classic Jacaranda. This funky record features many great tracks including "Apache Talk", "Gentle Rain", "Jacaranda", and "Danse V", that nicely brings together Brazilian grooves blended with seventies psychedelic funk, and jazz. Ontop of featuring the Brazilian guitarist Bonfá, the record also includes some other notable musicians including Ray Barretto, Idris Muhammad, Airto Moreira, Stanley Clarke, and was arranged by Eumir Deodato. Jacaranda was certainly one of those records I had been wanting to hunt down for quite sometime, therefore it's good to see that after this past weekend, I can now cross it off my forever growing wish list.
