Disco...Back in Time

A couple years back a picked up a used copy of Back in Time's 1978 self-titled album. I can't really remember what the whole appeal was to the record since it has taken me some time to really get into it. That being said, a couple songs from the LP have really grown on me including "El Condor Pasa (If I Could)" and the track I'm featuring today from the record "Back in Time". The title-track to the album takes some time to develop, as it features a really cheesy intro, however after the drums slowing build up and the song gets in full swing, I find myself really enjoying the overall mid-tempo groove that the song produces. I can see some not really enjoying this, however those that tend to love those disco gems produced by Cerrone, Don Ray, and Alec R. Costandinos this might be right up your alley. Anyways, I would love to know what you think about this interesting late seventies Carrere label release.

Hi TJ, I would say this is one of the best disco tracks I've ever heard and actually my most favourite version of the song "El Condor Pasa / if I could". I believe this song was ahead of its time and is still hot !!! I was around 8 or 9 years old as I heard the song for the first time on a tape and fell in love with it immediately and am still in love with this fantastic tune. I have the original 12" vinyl and play it very often!... So TJ, all I can say is that placing this song on your blog means to me you have an amazing taste for 70s Disco and I adore your whole work on this terrific blog. After hearing most of the tracks on your blog I consider you as a kind of "Disco Music Guru". 10 from 10 points or let me say: A+ !! Thanks a lot, Ben, Frankfurt, Germany

The real mark of a truly great record is the fact that after thirty odd years it still sounds as fresh as the day it was conceived and this is certainly one of them.

Interestingly, there are two versions of this record, the first released in France on the legendary Carrere label in 1978 and called 'El Condor Pasa'. The second version is the one mentioned in this post and was released in America in the same year but this time simply called 'Back In Time' and featured remixes of three of the tracks; 'The Sound Of Silence', 'El Condor Pasa' and 'All I Wanna Love Is Love'.

To be honest, I love the original and remixed versions equally....interestingly I also found out on the wonderful Disco Delivery blog that the producer behind this record Roger Loubet was also responsible for two of the greatest 'cosmic disco' records ever (well I think so!), namely Baciotti's 'Black Jack' album from 1977 and The Z.A.C.K. 'Disco Cosmix' album from 1978.

Listening to the Back In Time album, it definately has the same 'cosmic' feel about it. Luckily you can hear the original album and the remixes over at Disco Delivery blogspot as well as loads of info about this record:

http://discodelivery.blogspot.com/2009/06/disco-delivery-62-back-in-time-1978.html

If you do not download anything else all year, this is well worth snarfing.

Another amazing record Roger Loubet did (well the three tracks I have heard off it so far are astounding!) is Continent Number 6's 1978 album 'Afromerica' and as the title suggests, its an electronic/disco afro-funk monster of the highest pedigree...well up American Athlete's street! You can hear the three tracks by going to Discogs and checking out the Youtube vids in the bottom right:

http://www.discogs.com/Continent-Number-6-Afromerica/master/243428

If I still had a record player I would probably buy it as a mint copy is going for $18 so given the quality, it must be a bit of an unknown judging by the price-tag...definately good solid re-edit material!

Anyway, hope this helps anyone who loves this track as much as I do!

I picked up this album about a decade ago and was not really feeling any of the songs except the last track on the B side. "Love Is A Game" is always in my downtempo disco sets.
