More Mwana

At this point it's pretty much safe to say that there are a number of different re-edits out there of Black Blood's mid seventies Afro classic "A.I.E. (A Mwana)". With a song of this caliber to start with, it's certainly hard to produce anything other than a great result. Therefore most of the edits I've heard of this track, have been overall pretty solid. That being said I think Special T-Kolai re-edit of this funky African disco classic, which was featured on the Space Lab Yellow Phase 2 compilation, stands above the rest. One of the reason's I feel this way is about 4:15 into the track, there is a sudden break that dives into a funky saxophone solo that helps re-energize the second half of the song. The saxophone solo isn't something I re-call in the original version, therefore I wouldn't be surprised if this was something DJ Taha Elroubi and flutist Nicolas Laget, who along with some session musicians make up Special T-Kolai, added to the edit. Regardless, it's an absolutely amazing edit of an already true African disco classic. Enjoy!

African Chain Gang

I'm ending the week with one of the many great tracks off of Black Blood's hard-to-find 1977 Blood Brother, Blood Sister album, titled "Muko Wapi (African Chain Gang)". I actually own this album and the group's 1975 A.I.E. full-length, which interestingly features some of the same songs including "A.I.E. (A Mwana)", "Ewohe Dance", and "Kiswahili". Even though both records are very solid and have their distinguished upsides, I think I slightly favor their 1977 release a bit more. I think the Blood Brother, Blood Sister LP has just a little "more meat on the bone" as they say, with funky cuts like "Wela Wela", "Be Happy", and of course "Muko Wapi (African Chain Gang)". Overall, Black Blood in my opinion is one of the better African disco groups that ever existed, therefore I highly recommend snatching up just about each and every release that your lucky enough to find. Blood Brothers & Sisters Clap Your Hands!

First off, I hope to see all the Vancouver readers of this blog on Saturday night at The Woods for the Love Dancing disco party. As I've mentioned before, I'm guest deejaying along side residents Warm it Up Chris and Jordan Grey. The party starts around 11pm, and I'll be jumping on the decks around 1am-ish. We are expecting a good crowd and it will be my only trip up North for a while.

With that being said... ...here is another great cut, entitled "Wela Wela", from the Afro-disco flavored group Black Blood. This track is off of there 1977 album, which I was lucky enough to find a couple of years ago, Blood Brother Blood Sister. Take notice, if you ever come across any Black Blood records, I highly recommend snatching them up. I've only seen two in my entire dedicated-to-crate-digging life.
