New Release on Kojak Giant Sounds!

I'm excited to announce that my next re-edit 12" will be released by the Finland based label Kojak Giant Sounds. Over the last two years this label, which is run by DJ Ionik, has teamed up with some major heavy weight producers/deejays including Beatfanatic, Mike Burns, Leftside Wobble, Maxxi Soundsystem, Rayko, Nicholas Iammatteo and others to release some of the best disco/ boogie edits out there. My release with this label should be out sometime later this fall and will feature two edits, which you can hear by checking out Kojak Giant Sounds SoundCloud page. I'll continue to keep everyone posted as to the actual release of the new record once I have that information. Enjoy!

Caribbean Congo

Let's end the week with a new re-edit I recently did of tropical disco gem from 1977. As the title suggests, I went for a funky Caribbean groove on this edit. I'm sure if you listen closely, you'll be able to identify the original track. As always, I would love to hear feedback regarding this track from everyone. Enjoy your weekend!

Smiling Faces

For those that didn't make it out to last Saturday's Go Bang! party, you certainly missed a fun night. I want to thank all the people that came out for the night, as well as resident deejays Sergio and Steve Fabus for having me play. If you are ever in San Francisco on the fourth Saturday of the month, you must get out and experience Go Bang!. Definitely one of the best disco parties I've ever deejayed and/or attended. I will be posting my deejay set from that night sometime later in the week so stay tuned…

Until then, here is the track that I opened my set with in Jazzy Jens' re-edit of The Undisputed Truth's funky 1971 classic "Smiling Faces Sometimes". This dancefloor friendly edit can be found on a twelve-inch release put out by G.A.M.M. (GAMM069) The re-edit twelve also features a solid Latin flavored edit on the B-side. Easily one of the better re-edit twelves of the year so far. As with almost all G.A.M.M releases, this record should move fast on shelves, therefore I highly recommend snatching it up while it's still in print. Enjoy!

Nightflight to Trinidad

Here is the final track, titled "Nightflight to Trinidad", off of my recently released Cabana Disco Vol.05 12". The re-edit is an instrumental reworking of a rare Caribbean boogie gem that came out in 1981 (maybe the photo above will give you a hint).

For those that still haven't picked up a copy of Cabana Disco Vol.05, I wouldn't wait too much longer as the record is selling quickly in stores and there is no plans for a repressing at this time. That being said, I would still love to know what everyone thinks about the new release, so please fill free to leave your thoughts in the comments section. Enjoy!

More Cabana Disco

As the fifth volume of Cabana Disco continues to make it's way to record stores worldwide, I thought I would feature the A-side re-edit off the new twelve, titled "African Olé". This edit comes from one of my favorite African disco records of all-time which I picked up when I was in Paris last summer. I tried to add a "summer-beach" feel to the funky Afro cut. I look forward to hearing everyone's feedback. Enjoy!

Cabana Disco Vol.05 - Now in Stores!

I'm excited to announce that my new twelve-inch re-edit record Cabana Disco vol.05 has finally made it's way to record shops worldwide. This new twelve follows in the same footsteps of the rest of the Cabana Disco series, featuring three new funky edits that include the seventies Afro disco cut "African Ole, the heavy-hitting Italian funk gem "Funk Suprema", and the Caribbean boogie track "Nightflight to Trinidad". An interesting side note to this release is that songs re-edited on this release were taken from a selection of rare material that I found during my trip last summer to Paris. Just like the rest of the volumes in the series, this record is limited to only 300 copies, therefore I recommend snatching up a copy while they still last. I look forward to hearing everyone's thought and comments about this new release.

Here's Preview

B2 - Funk Suprema (full audio mp3)
B3 - Nightlife to Trinidad

Don't Know If It's Right

Here is a great re-edit of Evelyn "Champagne" King's 1977 disco cut "I Don't Know If It's Right" by The Popular People's Front. This re-edit was featured on The Popular Peoples Front's first of their always superb Limited Edition Series twelves. I originally featured this song on this site back in 2007, however have received a few requests to re-post the track, which is something I never mind doing especially when the song or edit is of this quality. Enjoy!

Gimme Some Million Dollar Disco

This week, Al Kent released the latest new twelves from his quickly growing and well-crafted Million Dollar Disco series in The Soho Place EP and The Ninth Circle EP. Both records, which consist of three tracks each, feature some of the best edits to date from the Scottish disco mastermind. On both The Soho Place EP and The Ninth Circle EP, Kent reworks some very obscure gems, including one of my favorite disco cuts in Sweet Talks' funky "Do The Beat". Overall, Al Kent has once again produced two more brilliant re-edit twelves that are a "must-own" for any disco enthusiast. Enjoy!

Funk Suprema

I'm very exciting today to share with you one of the re-edits that will be featured on the next upcoming Cabana Disco Vol.05 twelve, which should be going to the pressing plant sometime in the coming week. Due to a recent licensing issue that I would prefer not to get into, I will no longer be posting a lot of information about the edits that will be featured on upcoming releases. If your interested in knowing more about the original track, feel free to email me. Anyways, what I can tell you is that this is an edit of a rare funky Italian gem that was released back in the early seventies. I'm sure some of you will recognize the artist by the tracks vocals. Regardless, I would love to hear feedback from everyone. Enjoy!

We Can All Party Together

Keeping with the same theme as Grow Up, here is a superb disco re-edit titled "Party Together" by Tom Noble. This edit was released a few years ago as the B-Side track to Noble's twelve-inch Africa Bump release. I haven't been able to hunt down much information regarding the original track, however the edit has a nice uptempo boogie feel that really plays off of the tracks very soulful vocals. Overall, a solid edit that is primed perfectly for the dancefloor. Enjoy!

Jungle Music

Well I hope everyone had a good holiday season and happy New Year. It's good to finally be back on a normal schedule again, even though I must say the time off was very much appreciated and much overdue. Anyways, I thought the best way to ring in the new year, on this site, would be to go about it the same way I decided to end the last year, with a new re-edit!

Here is another re-edited version of Kongas' 1978 tropical disco track "Jungle". Now I don't make it a practice to re-edit songs twice so let me explain the back-story on this particular situation. Early last year when I was working on an edit of this track for the first Athlete Edits release, I couldn't decide whether to use the songs gritty verse vocals or exclude them altogether, therefore I made two versions: 1) A version with the vocals and 2) A more dubbed-out version of the track that had less vocals. In the end, for whatever reason, I decided to go with the more dubbed-out version on the Athlete Edits release. I always planned on sharing the other version of the edit, which in a lot of ways is very similar, however I wanted to provide enough space between the two different versions so that one didn't overshadow the other. Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion anyone might have about the fact of why I would post another version of an edit. For those that tend to really enjoy the originals grittier vocals, this version might be a little more up your alley. I actually really enjoy both versions, with them having a slightly different overall feel. At this point, I'm unsure if I would ever release this version on vinyl, especially because I would like to move on and focus on other material that I'm currently working on. That being said, having two versions of an edit in this instance is something that I certainly do welcome, especially when I personally enjoy each of them in different ways. Enjoy!

After Midnight...You Do It So Good

First off, Happy New Year's Eve! I hope everyone has had a chance to check the Best of 2010 entry I posted earlier this week. If not, please check it out and let me know your thoughts about the list and your favorite releases of the year. Also if you haven't already, please check out my new Best of 2010 Chart that I posted over at the Juno Records website. Lots of great records to be snatched up over on that site!

Well, it's the last day of the year and I thought I would end 2010 with an edit I had recently finished of Larry Page Orchestra's 1978 disco-stomper "You Do It Good". I thought this re-edit might be the perfect last minute edition for all those NYE disco sets that will be going off later tonight. This will also be the first of the many new edits I will posting in the next couple of weeks, which will also include the first track off the new Cabana Disco Vol.05 twelve. So stay tuned...

Anyways, have a happy and safe New Years! See everyone in 2011!

Long Gone

It's been awhile since I posted anything from Prins Thomas, and with the Norwegian producer being one of my favorite artists, I thought I would post a re-edit he did this year of D.I.T.'s (aka Destiny In Time Band) 1981 disco cut "Long Gone". The funky re-edit was featured on a twelve-inch single released by Chicago's Past Due Records that featured a number of the group's previously released material. Other tracks featured on the record include "Dance", "Get It Together", and the original version of "Long Gone". Even though I find that this record has been a bit of a "sleeper", I feel it's one of this year's strongest twelve-inch releases. I highly recommend snatching up a copy of the twelve, before you get stuck throwing down a hefty price for the original. Plus, Prins Thomas' re-edit is a nice added bonus that doesn't exist on the original release. Point of the story...Don't sleep!

You can purchase the twelve-inch single by Clicking Here.

African Seeds

It's safe to say that I've never been one for "mash-ups", however Gerardo Frisina has produced a superb mash-up titled "African Seeds" that consists of an unreleased Sabu Martinez track that is blended together with the baritone sax groove from Sahib Shihab's 1968 track "Seeds". This funky track is featured on the twelve-inch single Gerardo Frisina Blends Sabu Martinez & Sahib Shihab, which was released back in 2005 off the label Schema. The song has a heavy Afro-Latin groove while maintaining it's uptempo feel all the way through the track's last conga hit. Overall, the track represents a great example of how to bring together two funky Afro-Latin cuts and produce a brilliant new production. Enjoy!

Dancin' Machine

This has certainly been a great year for re-edits and remixes. A new remix that recently caught my eye was Henrik Schwarz's reworking of The Jackson Five's 1974 dancefloor soul classic "Dancing Machine". This new remix can be found as the A-Side track on a twelve-inch single that Schwarz released a few months ago off of Universal Records. Schwarz has done a nice job here of providing a fresh new take on a known classic, using a funky synth arpeggio melody as the song's overall foundation while re-working the song's vocal arrangement. I've noticed that this new twelve inch release has been a hot item on the Internet, therefore if you find a copy of this record, I highly recommend snatching it up. Overall, I find that it's always nice to hear a fresh new take on what truly is, an absolute classic. Enjoy!

Edge of Seventeen

Over the past year, the one-time blog now-turned label Kojak Giant Sounds has been releasing some superb re-edit twelves. These releases have featured some solid re-edits from Leftside Wobble, Nicholas, Alphabet City, and many others. One of my favorite re-edits from this growing series comes from Spanish DJ/Producer Rayko, who's re-working of Stevie Nicks 1981 popular hit "Edge Of Seventeen" recently made it's way onto one the Kojak Giant Sounds releases. I was already somewhat a fan of the original version, however the Rayko did a nice job giving the song just enough of a dancefloor friendly feel that you might actually see some brave deejays drop this into their disco sets. I tend to be a sucker for re-edits that take on popular radio hits like "Edge Of Seventeen", therefore this re-edit is right up my alley. If you find yourself enjoying this edit, I highly recommend checking out the rest of the releases from this upcoming label. Enjoy!

Send Him Back

Here is a great re-edit by Pilooski of The Pointer Sisters' 1972 rare soulful track "Send Him Back". I first came across this edit thanks to DJ H.M.A. when he used to often play it back during the days we used to throw the Studio! parties in Seattle. Regardless of the night, the funky re-edit always seemed to fill the dancefloor. I was excited to finally hunt down a copy of this re-edit, which has been recently re-released as the B-side track on the Don't It Make You Crazy twelve reissue. Overall, it's a great edit and one that I think every deejay and/or disco enthusiast should own. Enjoy!

Athlete Edits Vol.01 - Now Available!

I'm very excited to announce that my new re-edit 12", titled Athlete Edits Vol.01 has mad it's way into stores! This new record, which is a slight departure from my other re-edit series Cabana Disco, features three never-before-released edits that I previously featured on this site including reworks of Black Jack's 1979 disco gem "I Am a Disco Machine", Kongas' 1978 tropical disco cut "Jungle", and Ashra's 1979 cosmic track "Bamboo Sands". The Athlete Edits series is also meant in a lot of ways to help pay tribute to this blog that is now in it's fourth year online. I really hope everyone enjoys the new release and picks up a copy. I did a super-limited pressing of only 300 copies, therefore when they are gone, they are gone. ENJOY!

Now Try To Find Me

In case you haven't heard, the label Golf Channel Recordings has been on a tear, releasing some quality mixes and superb twelves as of late. One of those amazing releases comes in the form of a recent mix titled, Try To Find Me Vol.02, which was put together by former !!! and Outhud member Justin Vandervolgen. This brilliant mix brings together an eclectic group of artists and tracks that bridge a wide range of sub-genres including disco, funk, deep house, and techno. One track on the mix that has just about caught every one's attention is the second track "Get To My Baby". An extended version of this funky track, which is actually a re-edit(I haven't been able to pin-point the original as of yet), was put together by the tag-team duo Vandervolgen and nu-disco mastermind Lee Douglas in a group called TBD. This extended version of the edit found it's way onto vinyl as a white label twelve shortly after the full mix of Try To Find Me Vol.02 was released. As you might imagine, this record didn't take long to get snatched up in stores. At this point, the twelve is practically already out-of-print and you might have a little bit of an easier time tracking down Try To Find Me Vol.02, which is in CD format. Overall, Vandervolgen with the help of Lee Douglas, have provided us with both a superb new mix as well a brilliant new disco edit. Enjoy!

Livin' In a Small World Disco

Over the last year, a number of great re-edit twelves have been released by the label Small World Disco. This re-edit series has featured some solid edits from some up-and-coming re-edit masterminds including LTJ, Nicholas, Memory Man, and many others. Here is one of my favorite edits from the label in "The Wild Wild", which is a re-working of Barrabas' early seventies Latin Funk classic "Wild Safari". This edit was released back in May on the labels fifth release and was put together by someone who goes under the alias The Ivory Boy. I highly recommend checking out this release as well as all of the label's releases, as they continue to put out quality records. Enjoy!
